On Wednesday 16th June fourteen of our students, Tautu Te Keeti, Arryn-Gene Haumaha, Raungākau Tuhi, Leviticus Kaaho, Tainui Thompson, Albert and Piki-te-ora Mark, Nuka-James August-Wheki, Kaleb Snowden,Te Kauwhata Tamihana Matthews, Taraunahi Uerata, Oceana Luke, Waiatara Crown-Borell and Emily Coward-Makene represented our kura in a manner which epitomised our Whakahiapo values of Whakaute, Kawea, Hiranga, Atawhai, Pono.
Seven rounds, back to back were facilitated, and each round saw our players win some and loose some. As we entered the last round with nothing to loose our students gave it their all with an outstanding finish to take 3rd place and sealing a spot in the National Chess Tournament to be held in October.
First medals of the day went to Nuka-James and Raungākau due to winning their match with a Knight and Bishop. Next was Kaleb, who by one second came out victorious!! Not to be out done, Te Kauwhata utilised his Bishop to checkmate the King.
The prize giving saw Te Kauwhata presented with a special tournament medal after causing the biggest upset of the tournament; meaning he beat the top player in his division. Both Te Kauwhata and Taraunahi received special medals for the best gamers of the tournament. Absolutely stunning results!!
A game of strategy, a game of problem solving, a game of forward thinking. A game for all!
